Desiree Fixler’s core message was that speaking up is not only an ethical act, but a practical form of corporate protection: companies become stronger when people challenge consensus, surface uncomfortable facts, and confront risk before it becomes a public crisis. Introduced as the former Deutsche Bank sustainability executive who blew the whistle on greenwashing, Fixler framed the session as “Speak Up, Challenge, Grow” for founders, startup builders, and investors. She began with fear, describing it as a force that can either drive achievement or paralyze people into silence. To explain her own response to pressure, she recalled growing up in New York City during the 1970s and 1980s, when urban decay, fires, crime, and fiscal crisis made fear a daily reality and taught her resilience.

She then moved to her 2020 “dream job” as group sustainability officer at Deutsche Bank’s asset manager, DWS, reporting to the CEO. Fixler said she initially believed deeply in ESG as a “win win” proposition: financial performance alongside environmental and social good. That belief changed when, in her words, she “tripped over significant fraud.” She described the issue as greenwashing and, more fundamentally, severe governance failure. According to Fixler, DWS marketed investment products as ESG-aligned, sustainability-driven, and tied to the UN Sustainable Development Goals while charging higher fees without materially changing portfolios. She said the bank publicly claimed sophisticated sustainability processes and risk systems, while internally lacking the tracking systems needed to substantiate a reported €459 billion in ESG assets under management.

Fixler recounted raising these concerns repeatedly to the CEO, the management board, and the board, warning that U.S. regulators such as the SEC and DOJ would eventually audit the gap between external claims and internal documentation. She said colleagues privately agreed the firm faced severe trouble, but when she pushed to correct misstatements in the annual report, she was fired. She described being removed from the Deutsche Bank platform, losing her German residence and work permissions, and then facing a public smear campaign in which the company told Bloomberg she was a bad performer with questionable business ethics. To clear her name, she contacted a friend at The Wall Street Journal, provided documentation, and the Journal published the story.

The consequences she described were severe: U.S. and German regulators intervened, 50 federal policemen raided Deutsche Bank headquarters, DWS stock fell 14%, roughly €1 billion was wiped from market capitalization in one day, legal costs were estimated around €100 million, and senior leaders including the CEO were removed. Fixler’s conclusion was that fear-driven silence destroys risk management and growth. In her formulation, great companies are not created by people “nodding together,” but by people willing to ask tough questions, challenge the status quo, and confront uncomfortable truths before they become existential failures.
